Writing labels. Use a soft felt-tipped pen to write on your disc. Avoid using pencils or ballpoints. Write on the top of the disc only.
Storing discs. Keep your discs away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, and never leave them out after using them.
Proper cleaning. If your disc gets dirty or dusty, you can clean it using water, a tiny amount of soap, and a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe from the center of the disc outwards in straight lines.
Handle carefully. Grasp the disc with your thumb in the center hole and your fingers along the outer edge of the disc. Avoid touching the surface, particularly on the bottom.
Dealing with scratches. Polish the scratched area with a toothpaste-covered cotton swab or cloth, moving from the center of the disc to the edge.
If this doesn¡¯t work, coat the disc in a thin layer of Vaseline, neutral shoe polish, or furniture wax. Wipe off the excess wax with a soft cloth, moving in a straight line from the center of the disc to the edge.
If none of these tips work, take your disc to a CD store for refinishing.
Discs can last much longer if you clean and care for them properly. Follow these tips, and your discs will last as long as you need them to.
