WHAT IS SEO? According to Wikipedia, SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is defined as the process of bettering the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines via "natural" or "organic" search results for targeted keywords. Generally, SEO is classified into three major steps: Keyword Research, On-Page Optimization, and Off-Page Optimization. To improve Search Engine visibility, these steps are repeatedly executed until positive outputs of the SEO efforts are realized.
KEYWORD RESEARCH Keyword research refers to the establishment of targeted keywords by assessing the number of searches against the competition. The ideal keyword for any SEO campaign is a keyword with high search volume but low number of competing webpages. This relationship is usually expressed in KEI, which is called Keyword Effectiveness Index. At the start of the keyword research, you would like to list down keywords with high KEIs and concentrate your efforts on keywords showing exceptional potential.
ON-PAGE OPTIMIZATION On-page optimization is the act of optimizing the webpages to make it search-engine friendly. There are many issues involved in on-page optimization. But I usually focus on four of these: Page Titles, Meta Tags, Robot Walk-Thru and Site Contents. Make sure your page titles, meta tags and site contents contain your targeted keywords. Also ensure that there are no road blocks facing the search engine robots when they finally visit your site. These roadblocks come in the form of Javascript, Flash, protected pages, and the likes. Focus on these four elements and you will soon see your rankings improve.
OFF-PAGE OPTIMIZATION Off-page optimization is simply link building. Link building is achieving relevant inbound links from other websites related to your niche. Focus on achieving quality inbound links so the Search Engines will love your website. Get inbound links for your home page and your other inner pages. Balance the inbound links by varying the anchor text links. Get links from search engine directories, article directories, blogs, forums, social media and networking sites, etc. Unlike on-page optimization, there is no limit on the number of quality inbound links you can get. The more links you get, the better for your website in terms of ranking.
